"Here comes the Rawleigh man!" the children would run shouting to their mother as John B. Hicks drove up to the house with his drugstore goods.
John Bennet Hicks was the son of John McFarland Hicks and Sarah Ann Friddle. He was born 5 February 1860 near Greenville, Butler County, Alabama, the first of ten children.
John married Sarah Catherine Gibson, the widow of his cousin Charnic Athorp Friddle in 1885. He, his wife, and grown children, Ira, Oscar, Rilla, and Walter joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1897; he was baptized on 26 January 1897 by Wayne H. Redd and confirmed by Amos Cook of Safford, Arizona. They were the only members of their family to join the Church. The family moved to Arizona in 1900 to be near to Amos Cook.
His first wife died in 1905. On 11 april 1906, he married Thurza May Bigler, the daughter of Jacob G. Bigler, Jr. and Hannah Elizabeth Harley. She was born in Nephi, Juab, Utah. John and Thurza established a home just west of the old David Dodge home in Central. They became the parents of three childrenLeland Samuel (1907), Eliza May (1909), and John Anthon (1912). All were born in Central. Thurza suffered from asthma for years and passed away 14 February 1918.
After some time John remarried for the third time. Her name is not mentioned in this narrative, but it could possibly be Sarah Ann Drufee Price, widow of Benjamin Hyrum Price.
