Genevieve Mae Covell was born May 19, 1922, a daughter of E. Stanton and Eva (Moffatt) Covell on her great grandfather's, A.A. Moffatt, homestead north of Granville. She attended grade school in Granville, graduating from Granville High School in 1940. She then attended the State Teachers College in Minot, where she worked in the Dean of Women's office and earned her Standard Diploma with a special in music in 1942. She taught primary grades and music in Burlington until her marriage.
Genevieve was married to Alton G. Long November 26, 1944, in Granville. They made their home in Granville where he owned and operated Gamble's Hardware for several years before moving to Minot in 1951. From this union five sons and one daughter were born. She was very active in her children's lives supporting them through PTA, Boys and Girls Scouts, and sports and music booster programs as well.
She was an active member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Minot taking on leadership roles in the Women's Fellowship, Mayflower and Evening Circles, as well as the church's Sunday school program as needed. Gen, with others at her side, was instrumental in establishing the church's unique community service project "The Pilgrim Shoppe", Minot's first consignment shop which provided low cost clothing and household items to needy families and frugal shoppers in the area. For distinguished service in her long and loyal career as "just an ordinary church lady" (as she called herself) she was nominated by her local church, and recognized by the National Conference in the mid-1990's. She was a former member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Granville."
Surviving family includes: husband of 63 years, Alton, Minot; children, Dennis Long and his special friend, Jody, rural Minot, Laddie (DeEtt) Long, Minot, Larry Long, Miami Beach, FL, Sharon (David) Schroeder, Minot, and Gary (Lynnette) Long, Minot; grandchildren, Elaine (K.C.) O'Fallon, Lynn (Monica) Long, and Michael (Mary) Long; Jim (Kim) Long, Pam (Andy) Byzewski, and Brad Long and their mother, Diane Long-Schwab; Heather (Duane) Helms and Tiffany Long (Shannon Brown); Jonathon and Justin Schroeder, and Joshua, Jaymee, and Drew Long; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, step brother, Joe (Karen) Petersen, Granville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Estella Peterson Covell; son, Dale (who passed away Aug. 6, 1994); grandson, Allen Long; and an infant brother.
Memorial Service: Monday, June 2, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ, Minot.
Interment: Granville Community Cemetery, Granville, ND.
