We never knew Ray Wellman but in a sense this man has become part of the history of where my family lives. You see, Ray was the original owner of our home and while we didn't actually purchase it from him (we moved to Vancouver some years after he passed away), he left a few mementos at our house. Being the family historian that I am, I've always been curious about him. He seems to have been quite handy and someone my husband would have benefited from knowing what with our bathroom update. Ray installed water pipes inside the fireplace insert to heat hot water, the ceiling intake system to circulate the air, electric fans on the North and South side of the house to circulate the attic air, a sprinkler system that he installed by hand (we have his original map). He built a nice shop (now my husbands man cave), and created a beautiful stone BBQ complete with a sink for bringing home and washing the catch of the day. Ray also placed his initials in the cement of the back patio when it was poured. We never knew much about him except from the neighbor across the street (Louis) who told us that he packed so much stuff in the attic above the garage that it started to sag.

It's still sagging Ray but that's because WE have so much stuff up there too. :)

Ray worked as a bottler for the Lucky Brewery for forty two years before retiring in October, 1984. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 37 in Long Beach and the Northwest Antique Airplane Club. It is believed he was married three times. His first wife Florence G. Wellman died in a car accident at the age of 28. She is buried at Park Hill in section J 6-5. On June 3, 1955 he married Jane N. Sumner. She died of cancer in 1975 and is buried next to Ray underneath a tree in section V 206. On January 10, 1976 Ray and Joanne Bricker were married in the Columbian Presbyterian Church until Ray's death in 1985. It is my understanding that at that time Joanne moved to Idaho.

Our home when we moved in had close to thirty beautiful rhododendrons, original to the yard that he and his wife planted. Many of them still remain.
