Stanwood - Duane E. Aardema, age 61 of Stanwood, passed away at home following a long courageous battle with heart and lung disease.
He was born March 21, 1944, in Grand Rapids the son of Herbert A. and Gertrude C. (Romkema) Aardema. Duane was honorably discharged from the United States Army serving in the Vietnam War. He married Janice M. Kutchinski on Dec. 6, 1969. Duane earned his degree in H.V.A.C. from Ferris State University. He worked in the Hearing and Air Conditioning field for many years. Duane was a charter member of the Stanwood Buffalo Eagles Aerie No. 4360 and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post No. 4102 of Rogers Heights.
Following his retirement, Duane was happily able to devote his life to his loving family, whose members include: his wife, Janice of Stanwood; two sons, Dwayne (Sonya) Aardema of Stanwood and James Aardema of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Shera K. Aardema, Austin Aardema, Jarod Bazzett and Jacob Aardema; brother, Herbert J. Aardema of Grand Rapids; three sisters: Judy (Wally) Bobeldyke of Grandville, Karen L. Conklin of South Carolina and Carol L. (George) Allen of Six Lakes; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will take place 1 pm Wednesday at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with the Rev. Ron White officiating.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm and one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Burial will be at Highland View Cemetery in Big Rapids.
Memorial contributions in Duane's name may be made to the donor's choice.
