Carl was born in Sijsele, West Flanders, Belgium. It is close to Moerkerke, Belgium. He is the son of John 'Joannes' Ignatius Staelens and Anna Catherina Schoutteet He married his wife Marie Theresia Rapalier in Moerkerke on 14 Sept 1876. Of that union they had seven children born in Belgium, Kamel, Emily, Julius, Remedius, Alphonse P.L. Fostor and a son Joseph Stollins that passed Aug 1889 upon their arrival in Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado. They had another daughter born 1886 that was still born while they still lived in Belgium. They immigrated to the States and arrived in New Orleans April 23, 1889 after suffering trouble at sea. Arrived in Boulder on Aug 27 1889. Marie passed giving birth to Joseph Stollins. He worked very hard providing for his children. He eventually owned a Threshing Company consisting of four steam engines and the equipment needed to thresh the fields. They were in competition with the DeBacker family who also did the same type of work. He received his Letter of Intent after being in the Unites States for ten years. Two years later became a Naturalized Citizen of the United States. To get his Naturalization he had to provide proof that he was a good citizen, not been in trouble with the law and was able to provide for his family. Signing his Naturalization was John DeBacker and Timothy Shanahan. In Nov 02 1898 he married Maggie Mullins from Pennsylvania in Denver, Colorado. Misfortune came while he was pushing his beloved Maxwell car into the garage backward with his grandson John L Stolns helping him. He got his hand caught between the wooden spokes and the garage door. Altho seeking Medical help Gangrene set in and he passed. He is buried in the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church Cemetery in Boulder Colorado. After much negotiation (nearly 3 years)over his Will, Maggie required hospitalization for a Gall Bladder Surgery and succumbed after infection set in. Maggie is buried along with her husband Carl. ***Note*** Death Certificate says he was born 16 Feb 1852, other records support that date. One doc says Carl was born 15 Feb 1841.
