Pauline A. Flagg, 91, former nurse and loving mother of 10

During her lifetime, Pauline A. Flagg of Portland accomplished what most people today would consider nearly impossible. She juggled the responsibilities of being a full-time nursing supervisor with raising 10 children.

In the process, Mrs. Flagg kept her family together despite a 1957 fire that destroyed their home on Inverness Street. Her children went to live with neighbors but moved back into their home three months later, after it was rebuilt by friends with help from students at Portland High School.

"We all went and lived with friends. Back then, things were different. It was a close-knit neighborhood," a daughter, Patricia McGeehan of Portland, said Saturday.

Mrs. Flagg, 91, who lived for many years on Alton Street, died Sept. 24, 2004. She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd C. Flagg.

Mrs. Flagg worked as an evening charge nurse at the former Osteopathic Hospital of Maine for 28 years. Prior to that, she worked at the Maine General Hospital and a local nursing home.

Her husband encouraged her to take early retirement. McGeehan said her father wanted to travel, but she recalled that her mother did not want to retire at 62.

The couple ended up buying a trailer and spending their winters in Florida. They also owned a camp on Highland Lake where McGeehan remembered being treated to "amazing meals" that her mother cooked.

"If I didn't come to camp on the weekends, my mother would call me and say, 'Where are you?' " she said.

Another daughter, Margaret McCullough of Old Orchard Beach, said her mother was a tireless worker. She would leave every day at 2:30 p.m. to begin her 3 to 11 p.m. shift as the evening charge nurse at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine, which is now called Brighton Medical Center.

Mrs. Flagg never learned to drive, which meant that her children, as they obtained their driver's licenses, often drove her to work. Her husband picked her up after her shift ended.

"She worked very hard to raise 10 kids," McCullough said. "But she was lucky, too. Her mother lived just two streets from us. My grandmother would come over and watch us every day (after her mother left for work). That's how my mother could work all those years."

Mrs. Flagg was an only child, the daughter of Charles and Emma Floyd McKenney.

"I asked my mother one day: Whatever possessed you to have 10 kids?" McGeehan said. "She said, 'I didn't plan it that way.' "

Mrs. Flagg is survived by 25 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
