Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Perth, Australia, and Bishop of the Titular See of Pharan, Monsignor John Joseph Rafferty was born in Killaloe, County Clare, Ireland, and was ordained to the priesthood in Perth on April 25, 1936. Elected Auxiliary for the Metropolitan See of Perth by Pope Pius XII, he received his episcopal consecration on October 26, 1955, from Archbishop Romolo Carboni, assisted by Bishops Alfred Joseph Gummer and Launcelot John Goody. He died suddenly at the early age of 49, in his hometown of Killaloe, on the day before he was due to return to Perth and lies buried in the grounds of St. Flannan's Cathedral, where he was baptized.
