Mark Wayne "Shoestring" Nichols, 53, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024.
Mark lived his life on his own terms, bound only by his desire for adventure and love of the rails. Through hundreds of online videos, Mark shared his life and knowledge of traveling with hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide.
Mark was a diligent and loving son to his mother and a steadfast friend to his siblings. He is preceded in death by his father James Nichols, grandmother Mertice Montgomery, and grandfather Guy Montgomery. He is survived by his mother Karen Montgomery, siblings Ross Nichols, Mary Nichols, and Jessica Nichols, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being made and will be announced at a later time.

Mark Nichols, the Tennessee man who went missing on March 27, has been found dead. His body was recovered from Boone Lake in Johnson City Friday afternoon on April 5. Nichols was a well-known content creator with over 200k subscribers on his YouTube channel 'Hobo Shoestring,' where he documented his cross-country train travels. The Johnson City Police Department informed News Channel 11 that a fisherman discovered his body in the vicinity of Knob Creek Dock Road.

Mark rode the freight trains since 1989 and accumulated a distance over 2,700,000 miles of steel rails in 49 USA states, eight provinces of Canada and 14 states in Mexico.
He spent his first 31 years homeless riding trains, and later had to get a small apartment because of medical issues. It was very hard having walls and a roof because he preferred to be outside. He stayed away riding more than he stayed in the little apartment.
He was doing his best, after getting hit by a car and then he was struck by a train October 2017. His Hand and Arm healed quite well.
He had approx 200 thousand subscribers (and 515 videos) on his YouTube Channel with regard to Freight Trains and life on the railroads.
