James was a private in Co. H, 42nd Virginia Infantry, CSA. As a mechanic, he enlisted May 22, 1861 at Spoon Creek, Patrick Co., Virginia. He was hospitalized from July 19 through the 21st, 1862. By November 1st of that year, he was sent home "to get clothes for the company." Thomas was absent through December 31, 1862. James was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He was transferred to C.S. Navy on April 4th, 1864.
