Augustus Harrison Martin

Well-known Resident Passes Away at His Home in the Borough. Augustus Harrison Martin, aged 73 years, one of the best known residents of this vicinity, died last night at his home, 32 Grandview avenue, North Plainfield, following a long illness from complications. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Augustus Martin, of this city, and was born on West Second street on October 31, 1844.
Mr. Martin's father, who was familiarly known as Dr. Martin, was one of Plainfield's first tax collectors, which position he held for many years, and was also overseer of the poor. A. H. Martin was engaged in the grocery business with his brother, James Martin, of this city, the store being located where Schreiner Brothers are now engaged in business, at Park avenue and West Second street.
In later years the brothers gave up the business, and James Martin served the city as tax collector and assistant chief of the fire department, and for sixteen years was assistant to Postmaster E. H. Bird, retiring when the present incumbent, A. E. Hoagland was appointed.
For some time Martin has lived retired. He was for many years an officer of the Gazelle Engine Company, in the days of the volunteer department, and he possessed a silver trumpet, presented to him in appreciation of his faithful services, which he prized highly. He never held any public office.
Mr. Martin leaves wife, Hannah B. Martin; three children, Miss Nellie Martin, Harry F. Martin and Frederick A. Martin, the last named, clerk of North Plainfield, who is also engaged in the real estate and insurance business in this city, and one brother, James Martin. The funeral will be held at the late home tomorrow afternoon at 3:15 o'clock. Rev. Dr. C. M. Anderson, of the First Methodist church, will officiate. The interment will be made in Hillside Cemetery.
