U.S. Army, World War II veteran; volunteer fireman

Leonard L. "Jack" Armato, 90, of Vineland died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in South Jersey Regional Healthcare Medical Center in Vineland.

He was born in Richland, to the late Filippo and Giovannini (Savona) Armato, where he remained a longtime resident before moving to Vineland. A master carpenter by trade, Jack actively worked for many years after retirement age. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, holding the rank of sergeant in the 117th infantry. Jack received the Bronze Star Medal G.O. 120 HQ30 3rd Inf 12 Dec 44, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguish Service Medal. He was a member of the VFW Post 158 in Landisville, where he served as first commander, and was a volunteer fireman for the Richland Volunteer Fire Company. A past member of the Vineland North Italy Club, Jack enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Philadelphia sports fan. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and arguing politics.

He is survived by two sons, Philip and wife Marlene Armato of Richland, and Leonard Paul and wife Lisa Armato of Mays Landing; a daughter, Trish Armato of Richland; four stepsons, Leon and wife Julie Novicke of Vineland, Michael Novicke of Newfield, Anthony Novicke of Florida, and Robert and wife Nora Novicke of Vineland; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean (Gambacorta) Armato; wife, Marguerite (Novicke) Armato; daughter, Virginia Poulos; granddaughter, Sara Jean Ashmore; brothers, Salvatore, Sylvester and Edward Armato; and sisters, Rosalie DiStefano and Margaret "Midge" Liguori.

A funeral home visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Rone Funeral Service, A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from St. Francis of Assisi Church, 23 W. Chestnut Ave., Vineland.

Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineland.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Rone Funeral Service, 1110 E. Chestnut Ave., Vineland.

Donations may be made in his memory to VFW Post 158, care of Quarter Master Robert Hensel, 812 Harding Highway, Buena NJ 08310.
