Rosemary Gilbert, 83, longtime resident of Wadsworth, passed away on Feb. 17th, 2007 after a lengthy illness.

She died in the loving care of the Sisters of Charity at St. Catherine's Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

She was born in Akron to Paul and Mary Greenwald and graduated from Buchtel High School in 1940 as valedictorian of her class. She also graduated from the University of Akron in 1946 and taught high school in Medina and Wayne Counties for over 30 years before retiring in 1983. Both personally and professionally, education had always been of the utmost importance to her. Despite being widowed at a young age, she amazingly put all three of her daughters through college and one through law school. She also strongly encouraged other women, both students and co-workers, to pursue their educational dreams and professional goals.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis H. Gilbert, and her sister, Elizabeth Greenwald. She is survived by three daughters as well as numerous good friends, neighbors and former students.

Inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Akron. Per her wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity or to the Morris Animal Foundation, 45 Inverness Drive East, Englewood, Colo. 80112.

Published in the Akron Beacon Journal on 2/18/2007.

Student comments:

Roger Houglan: I still remember you mom as one of my best teachers and she had to be -- or at least incredibly tolerant to put up with the likes of me. And she taught me what I came to realize was probably the most important and/or useful skill in my lifetime: how to type. I may have loved learning to play an instrument more and that's given me a lifetime of enjoyment, but it never helped pay any bills. Typing did.
