Pvt. James Walter Byrum

Funeral arrangements have been completed for Pvt. James Walter Byrum, whose body will arrive in Union City by train at 11:12 a. m. Wednesday.

Services will be held on Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Fraze funeral home in Union City with Rev. Zelma Mills officiating. Full military burial in charge of the American Legion will be made in Saratoga cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 o'clock noon Wednesday.

Pvt. Byrum, who resided on Winchester, route four, prior to entering the service, was killed in action in Germany on December 6, 1944, at the age of 19.

Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orla Byrum, now residing near Union City, and five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Lester Walling, of North Salem, Mrs. Keith Halley, of Union City, Harold Byrum, of near Union City, and Carroll and Freddie Byrum, at home. One sister preceded him in death.

His body was among the remains of 5,864 American servicemen returned from Europe aboard the army transport Lawrence Victory.

He was born on January 12, 1925 in Darke county and moved with his family to Randolph county at the age of five. He graduated from Saratoga high school and followed the occupation of farming before entering the service in May 1944.

Pvt. Byrum received his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama.
