Entered the United States Army in 1939, serving with the 7th Cavalry Regiment. Awarded a permanent commission under the Thomason Act in 1940, he transferred to the Army Air Corps and was awarded his wings in 1941. Served during World War II in China, Japan and the Pentagon. Attained the rank of Colonel, prior to resigning. Graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (Class of 1939). Preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lanier and Frances Gillespie McKnight.
