He met and fell in love with Helen Ethelyn Leiter and on August 4, 1919 they were both married at the young age of seventeen in Protection Kansas. Reed and Helen shared a wonderful life together and were happily married for 53 years until his death in March of 1972.
Reed worked as a manager for the Western Light and Power Corporation. This job had him working in Protection, Caldwell and Wellington among other towns.
Reed and Helen had four children. Gwendolyn Aline, born in 1919, Vernon Reed born in 1922, a stillborn son born in 1923, and Earl Victor born in 1928.
He loved fishing and when he retired, he and Helen bought an RV and enjoyed traveling.
They are buried in Protection Cemetery alongside their infant son.
