James McCary Obituary


Mr. James Calvin McCary, age 90 of Sylacauga, passed away February 26, 2018 at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City. Funeral services for Mr. McCary will be Thursday, March 1 at Curtis and Son North Chapel at 2:00 PM with Dr. Larry Morrison and Dr. Rich Patrick officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the New Prospect Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Clay County, AL.


He is survived by one sister, Betty Tankersly of Sylacauga; one brother, Henry McCary (Rusty) of Port St. Lucie, FL; many nephews and nieces; four children, Joe McCary (Debbie), Frank McCary, Linda Ford and Martha McCary; six grandchildren, Sara McAvoy, Jonathan Parden, Cary Brand, Randy Ford and Gillian McCary; and many great grandchildren by Erma Reams, who deceased in 1984. James is also survived by his wife of 32 years, Marilyn McCary, two step-children, four step-grandchildren and many step-great grandchildren.


He was born in Camp Hill, AL, June 17, 1927 to Sara Jane McCary and James Leroy McCary. He served in the Coast Guard 1945-1946 and was employed by South Central Bell for more than 35 years and retired in 1982. James served as a volunteer with the red Cross helping victims of many natural disasters, and served in Washington and New York after 9/11. James was an active member of many churches sharing his faith and teaching
