Eugene Lee Agee, 79, was born March 28, 1924, near Schofield south of Half Way, in his grandmother's house [Florence Eidson Buck] to Marie Buck Agee and Riley Ralph Agee.

He lived most of his life in Polk County, except about two years in California and also during his military service. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and spent some of that time in Japan. He was self-employed as an automotive mechanic for more than 30 years in the Bolivar area. He later operated a sawmill, hauled gravel, operated a bulldozer and backhoe and remained active until his death.

He married Emma Jean Hobson on Feb 5, 1949, in Santa Paula, California, moving back to Bolivar in 1950. In 1951, he moved to Half Way, near the Burns community, where he lived the rest of his life. To this union were born four children, Gerald Lee, Connie Jean, Rhonda Ann, and Dale Ray.

He was saved at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Adonis when he was 19 years old and joined the church and was baptized. In 1966, he transferred his membership to Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he was the song leader, served on the cemetery board and remained a member until his death.

He passed away at his home on Saturday, June 28, 2003, after being diagnosed with leukemia three weeks earlier.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Emma Jean Agee; two sons, Gerald Lee and wife Debbie of Brookline and Dale Ray Agee and wife Rhonda of Half Way; two daughters, Connie Jean Helton and husband Vincent of Half Way and Rhonda Ann Agee of Half Way; six grandchildren, Phillip Douglas Agee, Courtney Lynn Agee, Kristopher James Helton, Kevin Ray Helton, Kody Ray Agee, and Madison Ann Agee; two sisters, Dorothy June Miller of Bolivar and Rowena Ellen Langston and her husband Don of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Bobby Miller, and one niece, Nancy Miller.

He will be greatly missed by his loving family and also by his friends and his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Pitts Chapel with Bro. Herman Coffey and Bro. Doyle Mayfield officiating. Music will be provided by the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church Choir led by Richard Wakefield and accompanied by Dixie Barber. Pallbearers will be Randy Jones, Jim Strader, Eddie Covert, Gene Skinner, David Campbell and Rick Lindsay. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
