Funeral Sunday for Mrs. J.E. Miller

Mrs. J.E. Miller, prominent and life-long resident of Jefferson, died Thursday, April 12 after a brief illness. The former Minnie Belle Fitz, she had lived here all her life and was active in affairs of the Methodist church and the P.E.O. She was 69.

The funeral rites were at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Slininger's, in charge of the Rev. L.P. Goodwin, D.D., pastor of the Methodist church.

Pallbearers included Dean Barker, Percy Gray, R.A. Morris, B.S. McCully, R.H. Maloney and Dr. D.E. Lyon. Music for the service was by a quartet including Mrs. C.C. Charles, Mrs. Percy Gray, Mrs. Espy Barker and Miss Vava Sanderson, accompanied by Mrs. Dean Barker. They sang the hymns "I Need Thee Every Hour" and "Abide With Me." Interment followed in the Jefferson cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 3, 1875, in Jefferson to James Wiley Fitz and Ann Elizabeth LeGore and grew to young womanhood here. She was graduated from the local high school with the class of 1890.

May 6, 1903, she was married to John E. Miller of Keokuk and they established their home here and engaged in the shoe business, the firm being known as the J.E. Miller shoe store. Mr. Miller preceded her in death May 16, 1942.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the Methodist church, the W.S.C.S. and the local P.E.O. chapter.

She leaves a son, Edward W., who is at present with the armed forces, serving as a sergeant with the medical corps in Scotland. Two sisters and a brother have preceded her, Leone Fitz, Mrs. Ella Cockerill and Miss Irma Beth Fitz. Her daughter-in-law had been here with her.
