John E. Miller, 63, Dies At His Home
Service on Tuesday, May 19
Active in Clothing, Shoe Business on North, East Sides of the Square for 40 Years

John Edward Miller, 63, was buried from the Silninger chapel in Jefferson at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, when services were conducted by the Rev. Levi P.. Goodwin, pastor of the Methodist church. Mr. Miller died Saturday, May 16, 1942, at his home in Jefferson.

Mrs. Ross Finch and Mrs. Espy Barker sang "Crossing the Bar" and "In the Garden," accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Dean Barker. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Maurice, B.S. McCully, Dr. S.G. Barker, R.H. Maloney, E.E. Cain and Chester Oppenhelmer. Interment was made in the Jefferson cemetery.

The youngest child of Phillip and Georgena Miller, Mr. Miller was born Jan. 17, 1879, at Keokuk. He spent his childhood there, and attended business college, coming to Jefferson in 1899 at the age of 20 years. He entered the clothing and shoe business on the north side of the square with his brother-in-law, Emil Haffner. Later he purchased his partner's interest and continued in the shoe business.

In 1914, he purchased the building on the east side of the square where he continued in business until failing health caused him to retire from active business life in 1935. The business was carried on by his son, Edward, and his sister-in-law, Irma Fitz, and later closed out.

He was married May 6, 1903, to Minnie Belle Fitz. He was active in the business life of the community for over 40 years, entering wholeheartedy into the effort of building up this community. His honesty and fair dealings in his business were well known to all with whom he came in contact. His primary interest was with his home and family.

Surviving are his wife; their son, Edward, of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Irma Fitz, who has made her home with the Miller family; a sister, Flora Haffner, and her son, Leslie, of Denver, Colo.; a niece, Mrs. Robert S. Smith of Lombard, Ill., and many other relatives.
