Phyllis Jean Robertson Flynn, 73, of Seymour, died at 1:25 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2005, at the Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour.

Mrs. Flynn was retired as Director of Nursing Services at Jackson County Memorial Hospital from 1966 to 1995 and had served as Nursing Supervisor from 1964 to 1966 and had been a staff nurse from 1962 to 1964. From 1954 to 1962 she worked as a private duty nurse. She also worked at Waterbury Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, Conn. as a staff nurse in the medical surgical unit from 1953 to 1954.

A 1953 graduate of Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis, in 1979 she earned a Bachelor of General Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, and was a licensed registered nurse in Indiana and Connecticut. She moved to Waterbury in 1953 and returned to Jackson County in 1962.

Mrs. Flynn was a member of American Organization of Nursing Executives, Indiana Organization of Nursing Executives, American Nursing Association Southeast District and Indiana State Nurses Association District 13. She was a charter member of the Indiana Society of Hospital Nursing Service Administrators, serving as secretary–treasurer, state by-law committee chairman, state nominating committee chairman, and president.

In 1974 she was a member of the steering committee to launch the Meals on Wheels program, and was a panel member of different health care topics and an American National Red Cross nurse. She served on the advisory committee for the Indiana University School of Nursing Continuing Education Program. On Sept. 8, 1971, she was appointed by Congressman Lee Hamilton as Nursing Co–Chairman of the Region Medical Program.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Winklepleck–Weesner Funeral Home in Brownstown, with the Rev. Howard Pauley officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Robertson Cemetery at Honeytown.

Memorials may be made to Robertson Cemetery or the Maude Welsh Nurse Scholarship Fund at Schneck Medical Center.

Mrs. Flynn was born Jan. 7, 1932, near Brownstown at the Honeytown Community in Jackson County, the daughter of Royal Blaze and Wilma Long Robertson. She married Edward J. Flynn Sr. on Sept. 19, 1953 at Brownstown.

Survivors include children, Mary (Jay Jr.) Steele of Pineville, Ky., Nancy (Michael) Stearns of Scottsburg, Edward J. (Debra) Flynn of Freetown, Barbara J. Flynn of Columbus and Carol A. (Bob Jones) Flynn of Evansville; a brother, Earl L. (Faye) Robertson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Royal and Candace Myers of Scottsburg, Laura and Todd Thurman of Salem, Jason Steele and Patches and Margaret Steele, all of Pineville, Ky., and John Myers of Scottsburg; great–grandchildren, Shane Skylar Prince, Andie Jane Myers and Vian Flynn Grace Steele; and many sisters and brothers–in–law in Connecticut, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband on Sept. 19, 1989.
