Jacob Owen Long Jr., 97, of Rockingham, died Sept. 21, 2018, at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg. He was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Lacey Spring and was a son of the late Jacob Owen and Clara Ausherman Long Sr.
He retired after 30 years as director of federal programs with Rockingham County Public School System. He was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church near Harrisonburg. He was also a member of the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge and the Harrisonburg/Rockingham Historical Society. Mr. Long was a U.S. Army veteran, S/SGT during World War II (March 1943-November 1945), where he served during the American Theater Campaign and was a prisoner of war in Germany.
On June 22, 1946, he married the former Mary Lee Dillard, who preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2014.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Louise Long of Rockingham and a sister, Flora Jenkins of Rockingham.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marguerite Wampler and Dorothy Lock.
Burial will be private and there will not be a viewing or visitation.
The family requests flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA, P.O. Box 413, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
