Born Alexander Chorostkowski and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, he played football at the Kennedy Collegiate Institute and with the Windsor Rockets junior football team. Nicknamed "The Murderous Ax", he played with the Ottawa Rough Riders from 1949 to 1951. Won the Grey Cup in 1951. Was married to actress Carol Channing from 1950-1956 and they had one son: Channing Carson.
