AGED CIVIL WAR VETERAN IS DEAD
LAPEL, Feb. 20 - Elisha Abney, age 89, only surviving Civil War veteran of this communite, died at 11 a.m. today at his home in Fishersburg following an illness of several months. Mr. Abney and his wife, Lydia Whelchel Abney, age 88, celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary at their home last Nov. 26.
The deceased, a son of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Abney, was born June 12, 1846, on a farm west of Fishersburg in Hamilton county. He was a private in the 136th Company, Indiana Volunteers, in the Civil War. After the close of the war, he returned to this locality and Nov. 26, 1871, was married to Mis Lydia Whelchel. The couple resided on a farm west of here until 45 years ago, when they moved to Fishersbyrg.
Surviving are the widow and eight children, George Abney and Mrs. Omer Critser, Anderson; John Abney, Noblesville; Charles Abney, Indianapolis; Alfred Abney, Fowlerton; Mrs Betha Harless, Lapel; Mrs. Allie Fox, Nashville, and Mrs. Nancy Smith, Esmond, Ill.
The body was removed to the Rex McCarty funeral home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
