A master bowhunter has gone to meet his Master, Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ. Robert Gene Abel was born on June 12, 1939 in Austin County to Andrew and Birdie (Mettke) Abel.

Robert started school at Peters School which he attended until the 3rd grade, then transferred to Piney School until he attended Bellville High School and graduated in 1957. He then attended Blinn College for two years. After Blinn, he attended San Houston State University intermittently for four years. Then he worked a 14-month internship at Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio, then went to Champ Taylor Hospital for 4-years in Port Lavaca, then after those 4 years, he returned to Bellville to begin his 41-year career, as it was then known, at Bellville General Hospital. He retired from there on August 29, 2008.

Being an avid bowhunter, especially whitetail deer and hogs, he harvested over 100 whitetail deer with a bow and arrow and many hogs, some coyotes, and a few turkeys and bobcats. He was one of the founders of Bellville Bowhunters where he earned the nickname "PAPPY."

Robert married the love of his life, Patricia Roush, on April 28, 1962. They were married for 36 years until she passed away on July 24, 1999. He then married Sheila Schrader Bolinger on October 1, 2002.

Robert is survived by his wife, Shelia; his daughters, Lynn (Mark) Boeker, and Audra (Ted) Kemper; also his grandson, Shane (Margaret Ann) Boeker; granddaughter, Rachel Boeker and her fiance' Aaron Boer; and sister-in-law, Peggy Roush. He is also survived by Sheila's two sons, Jordan (Katy) Bolinger, and Paul Bolinger and his fiance', Alicia Erwin; Sheila's granddaughter, Barbara Gwen Bolinger; and his beloved companion, Frostie. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Havemann; his brother, Don Abel; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends, and former co-workers.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Pat; his sister, Sheryl Abel; and his brother-in-law, Arnold Havemann.

Robert loved his family, especially Shane and Rachel. He had a heart for God and Jesus Christ, a wonderful laugh, and a great sense of humor. He has left a huge empty place in our hearts, but we have peace knowing he is enjoying his new life in Christ.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 16, 2021, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Knesek Family Funeral Chapel, 842 E. Main Street, Bellville, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Christ Lutheran Church, 1104 Carlee Dr., Brenham, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 1104 Carlee Dr., Brenham, Texas 77833; or Hospice Brazos Valley, 302 E. Blue Bell Rd., Brenham, Texas 77833; or charity of your choice.
