Solomon Northup born free and enslaved for twelve years until he was rescued in 1853, wrote about his experience. While in Richmond, Virginia in 1841, Northup met Robert, a man with a similar backstory to himself.
Northup described Robert " A large yellow man, quite stout and fleshy, with a countenance expressive of the utmost melancholy". Robert and Northup were chained together during their enslavement in a slave pen of a man named Goodin in Richmond. During this time Robert told Northup that he was born free, and had lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his wife and two children.
Robert claimed that he had traveled to Fredericksburg, Virginia, with two men for work, where he was enslaved as he did not have freedom papers. The next day Robert and Northup along with many other enslaved individuals were put on the brig Orleans.
While aboard Robert was selected as the captains waiter. Robert became part of a plan to escape between Northup and another enslaved man named Arthur also taken from freedom. However Robert became ill with small pox, and died four days before they arrived to New Orleans.
Robert's body was buried at sea according to Northup's account in 1853. It's unknown what Robert's last name was. His death took place sometime in mid May to early June, 1841.
