Thelma Hanks, 97 of Columbus passed away Monday, April 21, 2008 at Medicalodge of Columbus following a period of illness. Thelma was born December 14, 1910 in Sherwin, KS, the daughter of Charles and Vera Childers Hanks.

She graduated from Columbus High School and Kansas Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS. She moved to Gallup, NM in 1943 where she worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a "Harvey Girl". She later moved to Albuquerque, NM and then the Grand Canyon where she managed the El Tavar Hotel. Thelma retired in 1978 and moved back to Columbus.

She was a member of the Sherwin Christian Church. Thelma was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 5 sisters and is survived by 2 sisters: Fern Stephens of Columbus and Virginia Albertson of Riverton, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008 in the Murdock Chapel with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Her remains were cremated and her ashes will be buried in Edgmand Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sherwin Christian Church with the Murdock Funeral Home, 132 East Pine, Columbus, KS 66725 as custodian.
