PLYMOUTH - Richard M. Simpson, a Marshall County area resident for the last 15 years, died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis at his residence, 11975 11th Road, Plymouth, at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2008. He was 56 years old. With all of the qualities of a good man, it was said of Richard that he only improved with age. Born in South Bend, Ind., on October 12, 1951, Richard was the son of Lawrence J. and Margaret Stombaugh Simpson. A graduate of New Prairie High School, he earned his B.S. from Indiana University. On August 12, 1978, in Lydick, Ind., Richard and Doreen K. Thompson were married. Richard was a manager for Teachers Credit Union for 29 years. He retired in 2008. An enthusiastic I.U. fan, he enjoyed sports. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Richard is survived by his wife and by their three sons. They are: Joshua (Erin) Simpson, Mishawaka, Ind., Jacob Simpson, Nappanee, Ind., and Justin (Amanda) Simpson, Mentor, Ohio. A granddaughter, Vayda Simpson, Mentor, Ohio, and two grandsons, Josiah and Locke Simpson, both of Mishawaka, Ind., also survive. Richard's mother, Margaret Simpson, New Carlisle, Ind., and four sisters and a brother survive as well. They are sisters, Ardith (Buck) Terry, Springdale, Ariz., Nancy Geist, New Carlisle, Ind., Kathy (Ed) Kinney, Littleton, Colo., and Sally (Rob) Mattasits, New Carlisle, Ind.; and a brother, Robert (Marlene) Simpson, Mishawaka, Ind. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence, and a brother-in-law, Ernie Geist. Friends are invited to celebrate Richard's life with his family today, April 22, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, after 7 a.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services for Richard will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Baldwin, pastor of River Valley Church, Mishawaka, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind.
