He was the son of the late William Henry Burns and Lillian June Plumb Burns. On Nov. 16, 1927, he was married to the former Ella Marie Miller, who preceded him in death during 2000.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Chester, Junior, Dewey and Virgil Burns; and two sisters, Goldie Boylin and Eva Burns.

He attended the schools of Preston County, was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre, was a blaster for the Alph Cement Company for 42 years, ans was a member of the St, John's United Methodist Church at Parsons.
