Evelyn J. Backner age 101 of Ingram, formerly of Canonsburg passed away peacefully Wednesday November 22, 2023, in Bethel Park Skilled Nursing. She was born November 12, 1922, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Daniel S. and Tekla Drochak Kotyk. Mrs. Backner lived her life in Ingram and was Orthodox and was raised as a member of St. John The Baptist Orthodox Church in Canonsburg. During her career prior, to her retirement, Evelyn had been an employee of the United States Government as a clerk with the Veterans Affairs Administration for many years. During World War II, she was a "Rosie the riveter" in a plant in Michigan riveting B 52 Bombers and then worked on classified missions at the Pentagon, taking the secrets she worked on as a secretary, to the death. Eveyln enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and canning, but most of all being with her dear grandchildren. Her husband Joseph Backner is deceased. Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughters, Nadine (late husband Jim) Pulver of Ingram and Cheryl (Joe) Popivchak of Kintnersville, her beloved grandchildren, Nathan (Kris) Backner, Gabrielle (Shoham) Backner, Missy (Buddie) Pulver, Joey (Lauren) Popivchak, NadIne (Ryan) Tether, Jimmy Pulver, and Lauren (LJ) Hickton and 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Backner was the last of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, preceding her in death is her son Jeffry Backner who passed away March 17, 2021, sisters, Mary Kotyk, Ann Stevenson, Helen Uram, Julia Ruby and Dorothy Striner, brothers, John, William, Steven and Michael Kotyk.

Friends and family are welcome Thursday November 30, 2023, from 11 am until 12:30 pm, the time of Orthodox Parastas services in SALANDRA FUNERAL and CREMATION SERVICES, INC. Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner /supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg (724) 745-8120. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg.
