He was born and raised in Watertown graduating high school in 1965. After high school, he received his BS in Music Education from Berklee College of Music in 1974 where he specialized as a percussionist Instructor. Upon his graduation he enlisted and served in several branches of the military, starting his career with the US Navy, and ending with the US Army, serving a total of 26 years before honorably retiring as the First Sergeant of the 1st Calvary Division Army Band, Fort Hood, TX.
Joe had many interests and hobbies. His first love was always music and playing the drums. While able, he would always find a place to play or a band to join. He also enjoyed playing golf with friends and bowling with his league.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and survived by his brothers, Richard, and Frank. His memories and legacy will continue to be cherished by his 3 children, Keith Fuhrman, Raymond Mantz and Judy Smith (Andre). And his 5 grandchildren Andre Smith II, Andrew Smith, RayLee Mantz, Reese Mantz, and RJ Pace. And a host of friends and family who loved him dearly.
