Susan, the daughter of Glenn and Bertha Redmann Cotterill, was born in Ripon, WI on November 29, 1943. She was baptized on January 9, 1944 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Markesan, WI by Rev. George Kobs, with sponsors being Myrtle Mathweg, and Ervin and Gwen Pahl. She was confirmed at St. John's on April 14, 1957 by Rev. Kobs.
Susan graduated from Markesan High School in 1961 and was employed at the Green Lake Pharmacy and the Green Lake State Bank. She enjoyed writing, and received diplomas from the Christian Writers Institute at Wheaton , IL.
On December 10, 1961, she and Jerrell R. Abendroth were united in marriage at St. John's by Rev. Kobs. Jerry preceded her in death on May 3, 1997. After Jerry's death, Susan was employed at the Markesan Regional Reporter and at the Markesan Public Library.
She had been a Girl Pioneer Leader at Peace Lutheran Church in Green Lake and at St. John's in Markesan where she had also taught Sunday School and served in various other capacities. History was Sue's forte, and she enjoyed being a member of the Markesan Historical Society, having served on the Board of Directors. In 2003, she became the Green Lake Circuit Contact Woman for the Central Africa Medical Mission. A member of the Markesan Beautification Committee, this committee endeavored to keep the city looking at its very best.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Jerry in 1997; and sisters, Betty in infancy, and Dorothy in 1967, Sally in 2016 and brother-in-law, Harry A. Burt.
Surviving family members include children and their spouses, grandchildren and their spouses, great-grandchildren, a niece, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation for Sue will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St., Markesan, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Visitation will also take place on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 65 W. Catherine St., Markesan, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jason Jobs officiating. Burial will take place at Markesan Memorial Cemetery.
