Jerry Jean Bernards
April 30, 1937 - Oct. 20, 2023

Jerry Jean Bernards passed away peacefully at her home Oct. 20, 2023, at the age of 86. As throughout her life, she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren in her final days.
Born in Omaha, Neb., to Calumet and Helen Huckstep Myers, she was the second youngest of seven children. The family moved to Oregon when Jerry was young, though two of her grown siblings remained in Nebraska. This set up our family's unforgettable cross country visits throughout her life with the Cornhusker contingent of the family.
Jerry met the love of her life, Walter, while 'cruising' with her friends on Broadway in Portland on her 16th birthday. Walt, age 19, was one week removed from four years attending Mt. Angel Seminary. Three years later, in 1956, they were married, and for the next 66 years they forged a life full of family and friendships. Over their years together they lived from coast to coast and border to border as our mother held down the job of being married to an officer in the Air Force - all with five kids and one of her German Sheperds in tow.
Mom was a convert to the Catholic Church, and her faith and love of the church guided her life. She was a mainstay at St. Thomas More and the Piccadilly Guild for five decades, and the friendships she built there were dear to her and were with her till the end.
Mom's interests were many. Whether hosting one of her legendary Halloween or Christmas parties, cooking a gourmet meal for 20, processing dad's garden bounty or game from his hunt, playing tennis or walking Council Crest with her cherished friends, she was in constant motion. She traveled the world extensively in later life, hitting nearly all the 50 states (living in 10), and from Asia to Europe and South America. And with the kids out of the house her incredible flower arranging talent became her small business.
Jerry is survived by four of her children, David, Patrick, Kimberly, and Allison; numerous grandchildren; step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, who passed earlier this year; her oldest son, Christopher who passed in 2012; and all six of her siblings.
