Vice President of Paraguay. Born Luis María del Corazón de Jesús Dionisio Argaña Ferraro, he was a prominent politician and jurist. After graduating in law and social sciences from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción in 1958, Argaña began his career as a professor at the university before entering politics. He became a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay and later served as the President of the Supreme Court of Paraguay from 1983 to 1988. Argaña also held the position of Foreign Minister from 1989 to 1990. Argaña's political journey was complex, marked by shifts within the Colorado Party and his association with the traditionalist faction. Despite his earlier identification with the Stroessner regime during the military dictatorship, he later distanced himself from it, accusing Stroessner of running a police state. Argaña faced criticism during the democratic era for bringing Stroessner-era officials back into political life. His bid for the Colorado Party's presidential nomination in the 1993 election was unsuccessful, but he rebounded in 1998 as he was elected Vice-President alongside President Raúl Cubas. However, his political career was cut short when he was assassinated on March 23, 1999, amid political turmoil, just seven months after assuming office. The circumstances surrounding his death and its aftermath, known as 'Marzo paraguayo,' remain a subject of speculation and intrigue in Paraguayan history. Argaña's legacy endures through Dr. Luis María Argaña International Airport in Paraguay, named in his honor.
