Susan Alice Mozykowski 1942 - 2008 Lawrence
Memorial services for Susan Alice Mozykowski, 65, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church. Private burial will follow.
Mrs. Mozykowski died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at her home after an 18-month battle with brain cancer.
She was born Feb. 25, 1942, in Wilmette, Ill., the daughter of Dr. Martin and Alice Seifert. She was active in music and drama at New Trier High School as a performer and director of the "Lagniappe" all-student production. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated with honors from Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science in education in 1968 and a Master of Science in education in 1983.
Mrs. Mozykowski was a first-grade teacher at Deerfield School from 1968 to 1970. She was an accomplished singer and composer of children's songs and Christian gospel music. She wrote more than 50 spirituals and performed them regularly in area churches. She also performed as a solo vocalist with the 20-piece Jazzhaus Swing Big Band for 13 years.
She was co-author of the "Ginn Series Elementary Teachers Handbook" and made 30 Montessori teacher training videos. She developed a unique curriculum for the Sunshine Acres School and trained teachers in the Montessori Method.
Mrs. Mozykowski was recognized by the city of Lawrence with a reception and by Governor Kathleen Sebelius with a letter for her 40 years of service as an educator and entertainer. She was an inspirational speaker at churches during the last 18 months of her life.
She married Gene Kean on Dec. 28, 1963. She married [redacted] Mozykowski on Nov. 20, 1987. He survives, of the home.
