Barry Philip Abisch, 80, of Somers, New York, passed away on October 8, 2023. He was born on October 3, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York. Barry was a kind, generous, hardworking man, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Barry leaves behind a legacy of love and unity in his family. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Burchill Abisch; their son, Matthew Sidney Abisch and his wife, Jillian Indusi Abisch; grandsons, Myles, Brooks, Emmett, and Everett Abisch; his sister Marilynne Clancy; niece Jamie Johnson (Rohan), nephew-in-law Thomas Johnson, and many other relatives and friends. His memory remains a comforting beacon for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Rhea Abisch, his in-laws, Harold C. Burchill and Beverly A. (Burlingame) Burchill.

Barry received his high school diploma from Mepham High School in Long Island, NY. He later attended Hofstra College in Hempstead, NY and eventually graduated from Purchase College with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Barry proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970, demonstrating a deep commitment to his country and the values it stands for. In the years that followed, he committed himself to a distinguished 31-year career with Gannett Newspapers. Beginning in 1974, he held various news positions before leading the organization into a groundbreaking public online project. In 1993, he developed a program through the Ohio-based CompuServe Company, which transformed the local newspaper into a true website without disrupting any news staff operations. Under his leadership, the local Gannett news program expanded to include 12 different news sites in Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties, each providing localized news coverage. Barry's first initiative was to consolidate all the community news reports into a single online location. He remained as the website editor until his retirement from Gannett in 2006.

In his leisure time, Barry found great joy in travel and hiking. He loved unraveling the world's beauty through his adventurous spirit, expressed particularly through his enthusiasm for Geocaching. His love for history was reflected in his long tenure of volunteer service at John Jay Homestead State Historic Site for 12 years, contributing to its preservation and promotion.

Albert Einstein once said, "The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." It is an apt description of Barry, he was a man who unified his intelligence, creativity, and compassion to envision and create a better world.

While his departure leaves a void hard to fill, Barry's life and times remain a beacon of inspiration for his family, friends, and all who knew him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

There will be a private, graveside remembrance ceremony to celebrate the life of Barry Philip Abisch at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, NY with U.S. Army Military Honors.
