Phyllis Ackner
July 7, 1925 – August 12, 2022

Phyllis Ackner, who was born on the Northside of Pittsburgh and later touched dozens of lives in five states during her 97 years on God's earth, passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2022, in Pittsburgh.

Mrs. Ackner worked for many years in the jewelry business where she was a buyer at Wilken's Jewelers on Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh.

It was there she met the love of her life, jewelry salesman extraordinaire Walter Ackner. The couple were married Jan. 18, 1978, and spent 44 joyful years together in Bridgewater, N.J., before Mr. Ackner's death April 10, 2022.

Clearly, God did not want them to be apart for more than a few months.

Mrs. Ackner's passions included travel, antiquing, long-distance happy hour with her sister, Anne DiPaola of Pittsburgh, and a special bond with dogs – she was a dog-sitter for many years – that was nearly as strong as any she had with people.

Storm, a yellow lab, was one of her favorites. She walked Storm almost every day. Mrs. Ackner felt great joy when Storm jumped in the swimming pool after she fed him lunch.

Also, she was close with two smaller dogs, Bella and Baby, for whom she often provided a home – and warm bed -- when their owners were out of town.

Mrs. Ackner enjoyed having the boys over for poker and making them feel welcome and well-fed at her home. Walter and his buddies played for hours and had a regular all-day game Super Bowl Sunday for many years.

Walter loved to play cards, but if the Steelers were playing, he would leave his friends and go home and watch the game with Phyllis, who never lost the attachment transplanted Pittsburghers feel toward their hometown team.

Mrs. Ackner loved to watch sports, and, actually, attended Game 1 of the 1960 World Series between the Pirates and Yankees at Forbes Field. Admission price for a bleacher seat: $2.50.

It was over a poker game that the Ackners met Bill Veliky and his wife, Diane, two of their closest friends.

They traveled extensively, often cruising the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Two of their favorite destinations were the Dominican Republic and Hilton Head, S.C.

Mrs. Ackner was employed as the controller of a pharmaceutical firm in New Jersey and later was a dealer at Elysium Antiques in Somerville, N.J.

Mrs. Ackner leaves behind several family members and friends, who will miss her greatly.

They include her sister, Anne DiPaola (Peters), of Pittsburgh, who was one of her travel companions and with whom she shared many Manhattans during virtual Happy Hour; and step-daughter Ilene Angarola of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and step-son Lawrence Ackner of Los Altos, Calif.

Also, several relatives are spread across the U.S., including nephews Gerald A. DiPaola (Theresa) of Cranberry Township, Pa.; and Guy A. DiPaola (Donna) of Mocksville, N.C.; niece Lorchid Peters and her mother, Rosemarie Peters, of Hopewell, Pa.; niece Patti Perugini of Pittsburgh and her daughters; niece and nephew Joyce and Michael Levin of Michigan and their children; niece and nephew Cindy and Bruce Ackner of Michigan and their children; nephew Jeffrey Ackner of Michigan and his son; and niece and nephew Iris and Howard Pollack of Florida and their children. Also, several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Ackner; parents, Frank and Concetta Peters of Pittsburgh; sister Mary Perugini (Peters) of Pittsburgh; brother Dominic Peters of Hopewell; step-son-in-law Bob Angarola of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and step-daughter-in-law Mairen Ackner of Los Altos, Calif.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, 1014 California Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15202. Visitation will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Assumption Church, 45 North Sprague Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., 15202 at 12:30PM.

Interment will be at Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, 204 Cemetery Lane, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15237.
