KNELL MORTUARY LISTING OF BLACK BURIALS
CARTHAGE, MISSOURI 1917 - 1940

Other source: Missouri death certificate

Not much was known about Ella Alexander other than she was a black woman, widowed, approximate age 40 yrs and had been a patient at the county almshouse for 2 years.
Her cause of death was listed as unknown - probably drowning with suicidal intent.
She was buried under the direction of Knell Mortuary
The death certificate can be viewed at Missouri Digital Archives/death certificates online website.
Informant was Mr. Howell
Carthage, MO.

Her burial was listed as being in Oak Hill, but please NOTE
Although the death certificate lists being buried in Oak Hill, there is not a listing in the list for Oak Hill burials. For ones unable to afford burials, the county paid for the burials and they were interred in the north end of Oak Hill in a county cemetery named WOODLAWN.

For many years it was left neglected after it became full. Most graves have no stone because the county didn't pay for one, only the burial.
Jasper County has now taken over the responsibility of maintenance of the Woodlawn Cemetery.
