William Edwin Draper was born February 23, 1943 in Cheyanne County, Kansas to Charles and Harriette "Mossburgh" Draper. He attended grade school at both East White Eagle and McDonald Grade School and graduated with the class of 1960 from McDonald Rural High School where he was an involved student and excelled in athletics. His father was foreman of the Wiggenhorn Ranch, where he developed his love for cattle and horses. Following high school, he attended Cleveland Chiropractic in Kansas City for a short time and then returned to Western Kansas.
He married Lynda Franklin. To this union were born two sons, Neal Lynn and Nolan Edwin.
He began his lengthy career with the Rural Electric Copperative system in Bird City, Kansas with Northwest Electric. In 1972, he went to work for Great Plains Electric of Colby, Kansas and retired from Midwest Energy in August of 2004.
Bill married Susan Morgan in 1979 and they had two daughters, Tanya Marie and Shanda Morgan.
Bill was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Colby, serving the church in many ways. He was also a member of the St. Francis Masonic Lodge and had served as a 4-H leader in his daughters' club.
One of Bill's traits was his great compassion and encouragement for people in need of it. He was a loyal friend to many who will miss his gentle heart and quiet strength.
Bill died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at the Logan County Hospital, Oakley, Kansas.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of the home; his sons Neal and wife;Nolan; and his two daughters Tanya Douthit and husband and Shanda. His father Charles Draper of St. Francis, Kansas, brother Robert and wife; sisters Raythel Lea Reuber; Phyllis Bexley; Vivian Jones and Joann Lee.
His mother and infant sister, Janet and niece preceded him in death.
