Darwin W. Barnes, 94, Martinsville, died at 5:30 p.m. April 9, 2008, at the Grandview Convalescent Center in Martinsville.

Born March 2, 1914, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Emphor William

and Dessie Jeannette (Reeves) Barnes.

On Nov. 16, 1940, he married Leona (Mason) Barnes. She preceded him in death on June 30, 2003.

He was a machinist for many years, retiring in 1979 from Peerless Pump in Indianapolis.

He served as a Machinist's Mate, Third Class, in the U.S. Coast Guard from Feb. 20, 1943 through Nov. 7, 1945.

He enjoyed farming and reading and could repair almost anything.

Survivors include a son, Stephen W. Barnes of Bloomfield; a daughter, Debbie B. Thompson of Martinsville; five grandchildren, Kari, Daisy and Mark Thompson, and Mason and Clare Barnes; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Clarissa Perry and Reva Jeanette Carson.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary.

Burial in Centerton Cemetery will follow the service.
