FARMERS VALLEY — Nelson A. Tanner Sr., 80, passed away on Friday (May 29, 2015) at the Sena Kean Manor, Smethport, following a long illness.
Born Dec. 2, 1934, in Farmers Valley, he was a son of John F. and Neva Ella Kemp Tanner. On April 11, 1953, in Kent Hollow, he married Betty Jane Austin, who survives. Nelson had attended Farmers Valley Schools and had resided on Digel Hollow for 53 years. He had been employed as a roustabout in the local oil fields his entire life, working for different oil companies including Kendall Oil Co.
He was a member and past master of the Liberty Masonic Lodge No. 505 of Port Allegany, the OES Phoenix Chapter No. 15 of Smethport, the Coudersport Consistory, Royal Arts Chapter No. 254 of Port Allegany and the Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne, Ind. He, also, was a past Boy Scout Master of Troop 63 of Farmers Valley for many years.
He loved his family very much and enjoyed being outdoors and attending Masonic functions.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 62 years, are three sons, Nelson "Joe" A. (Julia) Tanner Jr. of Farmers Valley, Frank Tanner of Farmers Valley and Richard "Dick" (Brenda) Tanner of Coleville; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; three brothers, Chester Tanner Sr. of Coryville, Ward Tanner also of Coryville, and Norman (Barbara) Tanner of Eldred; and one sister, Maribelle Dunn of Coudersport.
Nelson was preceded in death by six brothers, Roy, John, Sylvester, Steve, Carl and James.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Frame Funeral Home, Eldred, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Max Simms officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Farmers Valley.
The Liberty Masonic Lodge No. 505 of Port Allegany will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
