Myrtle J. (Massie) Cowin, 92, Rice Lake, Wis., formerly of Barron, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Hospice of Okeechobee, Fla.

She was born at the family farm on July 21, 1915, in the Town of Sioux Creek, Barron County, the daughter of Gomer Robert and Alice (Conner) Massie. After one year of college in Eau Claire, she taught grades 1-8 in the Barron County country schools of Moose Ear, Liberty, Meadow Brook, Fourtown, Sunnyside and Victory.

On June 25, 1939, she married Harold Cowin at Center City, Minn. They bought a farm south of Hillsdale in the Town of Maple Grove in 1940 and lived there for many years. She taught school for 38 years, earning a Master's Degree from UW-Eau Claire while teaching or serving as a principal at Hillsdale, Dallas, Riverview and the Junior High School in Barron.

She really enjoyed her retirement, being at her home on Hemlock Lake near Mikana and spending winters at Okeechobee.

She was a member of Barron United Methodist Church, American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and Barron County Retired Educators. She volunteered as a tutor for the adult literacy league in Okeechobee and served as Vice President on the Board of Directors of the Okeechobee Council on Aging for the Glades Health Care Center.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, golfing, reading, handwork, going to the movies, playing cards and traveling extensively throughout the world, including visits to all 50 states, many countries and all seven continents.

Surviving are a brother, Gomer E. Massie of Chetek; and nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Letitia (William) Lyon and Hazel Lindblad; brothers, John (Mildred), Robert (Theo) and an infant brother Hugh; a brother-in-law, Ralph (Doris) Cowin; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cowin Massie; and a great-niece Wendy Briggs.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, from First United Methodist Church, Rev. Jeff Uhler officiating, with burial at Dallas Cemetery, Town of Dallas.

Visitation was held 4-8 p.m. Thursday from Rausch and Steel Funeral Home, Barron, and an hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.
