Research has show that there is a strong probability that the grave of Private Kingsbury H Bowley is incorrect. The findings are as. 1) There is no Kingsbury H Bowley listed on any unit roster of any Michigan Civil War unit. 2) There was no 1st Michigan Heavy Artillery at any time during the war. The only Heavy Artillery Unit was the 6th and that was formed on July 24th 1864. When the 6th Michigan Infantry Regiment was re-designated as the 6th Michigan Heavy Artillery. All records that were discovered lead to the conclusion that Private Kingsbury W Bowley, Company L, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery is buried in Section 1-D, Plot 1372, Cypress Hills National Cemetery. There is a listing in the register of dead Michigan Volunteers for a H W Bowley, Company L, 1st Michigan Heavy Artillery. Who has the same information as Kingsbury W Bowley, Company L, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. I believe That the listing for H W Bowley is a clerical error due to the fact the is no roster listing for a H W Bowley for any Michigan unit. Also it is not listed on the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Monument, Petersburg, Virginia. Also as per the National Park Service Soldier, Sailor Data Base there is no listing. Also the VA interment card for Kingsbury H Bowley, 1st Michigan Heavy Artillery, Cypress Hills National Cemetery. The VA interment card for this individual states that this individual can not be identified.
