Melvin L. Hoover Sr., 89, died at the Butler Veterans Medical Center.

Parents: Larry E. and Elda Calloway Hoover.

Wife: Eileen C. Hoover, married Jan. 17, 1947.

He retired in 1980 from Local 66, Operating Engineers of Youngstown, where he had been a heavy equipment operator.He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European and African campaigns. He was awarded a Purple Heart, European Theater ribbon with four bronze stars, presidential unit citation and an oak leaf cluster. He was a member of the Mahoning Sportsmen Club and Lawrence County Sportsmen Club. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed boating, target shooting and gardening.

Relatives: two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonita Suzanne and Peter Gibb of New Wilmington and Constance Louise and Patrick Phillips of Cranberry; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Melvin L. Jr. and Virginia Hoover of Montoursville, Pa., and Larry J. Hoover of Edinburg; a sister, Thelma V. Plunkard of Butler; five grandchildren, Melanie C. Fish, Virginia C. Hoover, Adrienne L. Hoover, Keith P. Phillips and Matthew B. Hoover; and two great-grandchildren, Nolan Fish and Mason Fish. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Darwin Hoover, Dean Hoover, Donovan Hoover and Larry Hoover; and two sisters, Dorothy C. Hoover and Betty M. Ryder.
