Martha Ann (Shields) Thayer was born May 8, 1936 to Duren Howard and Lena Odessa (Fox) Shields in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her family later moved to Moab, Utah. She married Norman S. Thayer Jr. on January 30, 1960. She earned a Bachelor of Science from University of New Mexico in 1960.

She was campaign manager Democratic Candidate for State Supreme Court, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, 1970; founding member Women's Political Caucus, Bernalillo County; chairman Mother's March of Dimes, Bernalillo County, 1974; trustee Shields Trust, 1994-2005. Member History Preservation Society, Petroleum Club, Museum Albuquerque (associate), Shields Properties (section treasurer 2008).

Her interests included genealogy, gardening, anthropology, politics, and antiques. She was a Native American art collector.

In the last decade of her life, she enjoyed traveling the world, taking many cruises with relatives. The many destinations she visited included: Alaska, the Caribbean, Italy, Croatia, and the Middle East.

Martha was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Norman, her daughter, Tanya Noelle, her sisters, Lynda and Wanda, and her brother, Darvin. She leaves to mourn her loss one son, a sister, many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
