J. C. Houff, seventy-two, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John D. Showalter, of Waynesboro, Saturday morning at seven-thirty o'clock. He had been sick for several months.
The funeral will be held Monday morning at eleven o'clock from Pleasant View Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. M. J. Kluttz, of Bethlehem Lutheran church, assisted by the Rev. A. J. Shumate and the Rev. Dr. Chas. F. Steck. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery. Pallbearers will be active, Glenn Cline, Joseph Smith, Harry Smith, Charles Houff, Haller Dixon, and Lester Dixon, all nephews; honorary, to be announced later.
Mr. Houff is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John D. Showalter, Waynesboro; Mrs. O. C. Landes, near Crimora; four sons, Ausbert M. Houff, Washington; S. E., Roanoke; Luther C., Staunton; Lawrence at home; two sisters, Mrs. W. K. Smith and Mrs. J. H. Cline, both of near Staunton. Mrs. Houff died in September in Washington while visiting at the home of her son.
Mr. Houff was a native of Augusta County, where he spent all of his life having been a farmer and orchardist. He had long been an active member of the Lutheran church, joining at Pleasant View and in later years transferring his membership to Bethlehem church.
Mr. Houff was widely known in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta, and his upright life merited for him the high esteem of everyone with whom he was acquainted. In his home, he was all that could be expected of a husband and father.
