It was February 5, 1865 and Robert was living at home with his family in Wauconda, Lake County, Illinois. On this day, at the age of 15 years, Robert enlisted into the Illinois 147th Infantry Company I. He was injured during his time in the service and mustered out on January 17, 1866 in Savannah, Dawson County, Georgia.

He married on February 17, 1887 to Catherine "Kate" McDonald in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at St Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, located on 1010 West Webster Street.

Robert and Kate had one daughter, Anna Elizabeth Monahan.

In 1891, Robert was working as a Private Detective in Wisconsin where he had some family. He had spent sometime in the hospital prior to this as a result of his military duty during the Civil War.

Before returning to the Soldier's Home Hospital in Danville, Vermillion County, Illinois where he passed away, Robert had most recently worked as a millwright.
