Elijah was a cooper, working at first, in Council Bluffs, later building barrels at home, under contract, while operating the family farm with the aid of his wife and sons. He was killed near Woodbine,IA when his team ran away, and he was thrown from a wagon.
Elijah was among the earliest pioneers to settle in Jefferson Township, Harrison County, Iowa in June, 1854.
