Leo was one of six boys and seven girls born to James and Martha Dent Gilbert. He attended the Leslie, ID elementary school, and worked on the family farm. He joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) during the depression of the 1930's, in the Salmon, ID, area, where he met his wife. He married Bernice Adele Road in Salmon, on Nov. 13, 1937. They lived in Oakley, ID, then moved to Ely, NV, where he worked in the mines. In 1943, they moved to Pocatello, and Leo began working for several construction firms as heavy equipment operator, last working for Goodwin Construction of Blackfoot. He and Bernice had four children, James, Adele, Norman, and Patricia.
