Funeral Services for Mrs. Vera Shackelford Abernathy, 86 of Decatur, Alabama will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday July 1, 2023 at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. Jimmy Bailey officiating. Entombment will follow in Calvary Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday from 1:00PM until 5:00PM at Reynolds Funeral Home.

Vera D. Shackelford Abernathy, began her journey on September 24, 1936 in Hillsboro, Ala. She was the daughter of Frank and Letha Ann Smith Shackelford Sr. She departed this life on June 24, 2023 at her residence in Decatur, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Letha Ann Shackelford; her loving husband of 61 years Freddie J. Abernathy, two sons: Ray Charles Abernathy and Freddie J. Abernathy, Jr.; five brothers; Frank Jr., Lawrence, Robert, Carl, James; six sisters: Willie Mae, Annie Lee, Maxie Ruth, Rosie, Dollean and Emma Ruth. one grandson, Michael Moody.

She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church. She later joined Pleasant Grove M.B. Church when she united in marriage with Freddie Abernathy. Vera was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, President of the Missionary Society and Mother's Board of Pleasant Grove M. B. Church which she loved dearly. Vera was known to say "God is Worthy to be Praised". With her infectious smile and servant's heart, she was loved by her community, friends and family.

She leaves to cherish her memory: five devoted and loving children, four daughters; Vickey Abernathy Ball and Viola Abernathy, both of Decatur, Alabama; Jacquline Vinson of Oxford, Mississippi; Cynthia Tate of Huntsville, Alabama; and one son, Fredrick Abernathy (Ann) of Hillsboro, Alabama; brothers: William (Helen) Shackelford, Chattanooga, TN; Bobby (Annie) Shackelford, Town Creek, Alabama; sisters-in-law: Mattie Mae Squalls, Wynne, Arkansas, Elease Shackelford, Hillsboro, Alabama; 14 grandchildren, who she truly adored: Roddrick Adair, Lakeshia Jones (Kendrick), Corey Abernathy, Ashley Strong (Andrew), Laurice Martinez (A.J.), Jameelah Muhammad, Christina Muhammad, Kenethia Imaghodor (Osasere), India Abernathy, Candace Vinson, Alex Vinson, James Vinson, Zaria Abernathy, Fredrick Abernathy, Jr.; nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; two god daughters: Johnnie Mae Booker and Brenda Adair Sanders and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
