Donald Preston Abernathy, 66, of Port Lavaca died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at 10:40 a.m.

He had a massive stroke November 24, 2007 which resulted in severe medical problems. He was left paralyzed on his right side. He was in and out of the hospital constantly after the stroke and it was discovered that he had advanced colon cancer at that time. All of his arteries were severly clogged and his heart was not strong enough to undergo surgery to correct this problem. He stayed optimistic and fought a good fight.

Donald was born July 18, 1941 to Andrew Preston and Ruby Mae Barrow Abernathy in Freer, Texas. He married Mary Lou Elaine Schane on May 2, 1959 in Freer.

He was employed as a contract pumper and an electrician for Lloyd Electric while living in Freer. In 1969 he was hired by Continental Oil Company and worked at the Rincon plant out of McAllen Texas, then transferred to Fort Stockton, Texas, and Enid, Okla., until retiring in 1990. He was involved with several business ventures after his retirement, the last being the manager of Bayshore Courts in Magnolia Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary Lou of Port Lavaca; a daughter, Laura Louise Robinson of Lake Jackson, Texas; and two brothers, Charles of Magnolia, Texas, and Edwin of Port Lavaca.

Donald was cremated and his remains will be scattered over "Donald's Reef" in Lavaca Bay. This is a favorite fishing spot of his and his younger brother Edwin. Donald did not want a funeral or a memorial service and the family is honoring his wishes.
